The Mongan Institute
The Mongan Institute is a community of leading scientists and programs in population and health care delivery science dedicated to transforming health care and achieving health equity locally, nationally, and globally. The Mongan Institute's research and training program is based in the Department of Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital with collaborations across MGH, Partners HealthCare, the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health (HSPH), and Harvard Medical School (HMS). Spanning data science to delivery science, and evaluative science to implementation science, the Mongan Institute is uniquely positioned to leverage the extraordinary research environment of MGH, as well as national and international collaborators, to solve the most intractable challenges in health care.
With over 90 research faculty publishing over 1,200 peer-reviewed articles annually, The Mongan Institute includes expertise in areas such as epidemiology, biostatistics, predictive analytics, cost-effectiveness, outcomes research, survey research, intervention and implementation research, health policy, health behavior and addictions research, decision science, primary care, behavioral health, aging and serious illness, global health, and health disparities research. In addition to its core research programs, The Mongan Institute provides a variety of cross-institute initiatives, including a research education and training program, grants management and administration, and a new cross-institute program in biostatistics and data science.
The Mongan Institute offers an academic home and collaborative research expertise across MGH's clinical departments as a component of MGH's Division of Clinical Research and through collaborations with HSPH and HMS's affiliated research programs. Among our greatest priorities is training, developing, and supporting the next generation of translational population and health care delivery team scientists through seminars, training programs, research fellowships, and mentored research opportunities.

Steven Bartels, M.D., MS,
Dr. Stephen Bartels is the former inaugural James J. and Jean H. Mongan Chair in Health Policy and Community Health in the Department of Medicine; Professor of Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Harvard Medical School; and Director of the Mongan Institute at MGH.
Before coming to MGH from Dartmouth in September 2018, he was the Herman O. West Professor of Geriatrics, Professor of Psychiatry, Professor of Community & Family Medicine, and Professor of Health Policy at the Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. Among his accomplishments at Dartmouth include establishing and directing the Dartmouth Centers for Health and Aging, leading the Dartmouth's CDC Health Promotion Research Center as Principal Investigator, establishing and leading the Collaboratory for Implementation Science at Dartmouth, and serving as Co-Principal Investigator for Dartmouth’s SYNERGY Clinical Translational Science Institute.

Research Programs :
The Mongan Institute's research centers and programs incorporate a wide array of methods to solve the most challenging and complex problems in health care. Examples include clinical translational epidemiology, data science, predictive modeling, cost-effectiveness analysis, decision science, health disparity research, health policy, health behavior, survey research, outcomes research, intervention trials, and implementation research.
Each center is an established leader in its field and is committed to transforming health care and advancing health equity for people with complex needs, and training the next generation of leaders in population and health care science. In addition to supporting research by core Mongan faculty, The Mongan Institute supports affiliated researchers and teams in the Department of Medicine and across clinical departments at the Massachusetts General Hospital.
