Dr. Huffman is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and the Director of the Cardiac Psychiatry Research Program in the MGH Division of Psychiatry and Medicine. As the director of the program, he serves as Principal investigator for over 10 studies spanning psychology, health behavior, and cardiovascular disease, including studies funded by NIH, the American Diabetes Association, and the American Heart Association. Members and trainees of the program have included cardiologists, diabetologists, eight research fellows, psychologist post-doctoral fellows, junior staff psychiatrists, senior psychiatry residents, research social workers, and Harvard medical students. In his work at the interface of psychiatry and cardiology, Dr. Huffman has given Grand Rounds at sites nationwide, presented research at national and international meetings, and published over 140 articles in peer-reviewed journals.
He also serves as the Associate Chief for Clinical Services in the Department of Psychiatry at MGH and the Director of Inpatient Psychiatry Research at MGH. This inpatient research has focused on assessment and treatments related to suicide risk in acutely ill psychiatric patients.
In addition to his roles as a resident and psychiatry medical student teacher, Dr. Huffman also has teaching roles in the Harvard Internal Medicine clerkship, and the MGH Social Work training program, the MGH Behavioral Medicine program. He has been awarded the MGH/McLean Plasky Teaching Award for outstanding teaching of junior residents, was twice been nominated for the Harvard Kettyle Award for outstanding medical student teaching, and received the Outstanding Research Mentor award in the MGH Psychiatry Department in 2016.
